I've interpreted (perhaps wrongly so?) a few people as saying the fact that he wasn't given an extension is a sign that they're having a wait and see approach with him, and I just don't believe that's the case. He's their guy moving forward, I don't think there's any question about that.

I don't think Alex Smith wanted the extension, as much so as it was the Chiefs not wanting to give one to him. He has an out clause after this year that basically means the Chiefs could pay him nothing and move on if need be. I think Alex Smith, also wanted to be able to choose where he wanted to be, and he wasn't able to do that. I think its very business smart, on both parts.
