Romney would have had a coherent policy based on American strategic interests and he'd have already laid the groundwork for both domestic support and international cooperation.
He was warning us about the folly of Obama's make-nice-with-Russia initiative during the campaign so he wouldn't have been out maneuvered by Putin. It would be an entirely different, and more favorable, situation so it's no stretch to imagine that Republicans (and national security conscious democrats) would support him.
