There are many cities around the world where you can go from relatively safe to scary in a matter of a block or two... with very few outward signs. But certainly don't let your ignorance get in the way of your condescending sniping.
The app itself sounds fairly useless though... unless it runs in the background and constantly checks GPS to issue warnings... in which case you'd better carry 2 or 3 spare batteries. At least until there are more phones like the MotoX that have "always on" sensors that don't kill battery life.
I'd also be loathe to trust a system that solely relies on user input. I'd want that combined with crime data and other sources.
Would be a good feature on Garmin in rental cars.
