Lol at the guy suggesting a Chevy Monza. I have shopped in this range a few times and the best bang for your buck by far is a 2000-2003 Maxima. Dead reliable with 220-260 HP (0-60 stick times are 6.5 or 5.9 for 00-01, 02-03) and 24-29 mpg, I personally like the body style and think it stands out from other sedans. Other great values in that range are the old boxy Cherokee 98-01, Honda prelude, RSX, but you have to hunt for these and find one that hasn't been owned by an idiot (goes for SVT focus too).

Avoid any VW in this price range, their quality has been better lately but the range you are in is a disaster. Constant little things that will drive you up the wall and cost you a fortune.
