I'm sure in the 50's, just like the 40's when my Dad played in the minors, players worked their day jobs then showed up at night at the ballpark to play ball...Especially in Class D, like my Dad played in...LOL

So yeah, unless you were a real star who was sure to play in the majors some day, it wasn't worth giving up a decent job for a very slim chance at the majors when playing minor league ball would never pay your bills.
