Collins leaves Chiefs to sign on with Washington
By ELIZABETH MERRILL
The Kansas City Star
Todd Collins’ eight-year run as Kansas City’s reliable backup is over. Collins agreed to a two-year deal with Washington on Tuesday, his agent, Brad Blank, said.
Collins is joining former Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders in Washington, and his departure leaves a big hole on Kansas City’s quarterback depth chart. Collins, 34, was Trent Green’s backup for five years. But it didn’t equate to much playing time, as he completed just 18 of 27 passes for 229 yards and one touchdown.
Weeks before the Chiefs were to start the 2005 season, Green was sidelined when he had a stent placed in his leg. But Collins was out with a broken hand.
Kansas City’s only backup with NFL playing experience is Damon Huard. Two other quarterbacks on the roster — seventh-round draft pick James Kilian and CFL star Casey Printers — have yet to take a snap in the NFL.
