My guess is they started shipping new batches with improved memory chips and fixed their firmware (I don't think they were up to 4.2 yet). The potential on these things is/was awesome, but the units I received were far from quality.
I'm actually surprised you can't find any bad reviews. When I was troubleshooting there were nothing but complaints about boot failures on Amazon and somebody commenting in every other review "wait for the next patch".

Oh, I read several bad reviews but the positive reviews dwarfed them. I generally rely on the 3-4 star reviews myself.
