I get irritated when a woman is offended when I refer to her as "ma'am." I was raised that way: sir or ma'am. It has nothing to do with age. I was just being polite. In my opinion, miss just doesn't sound right.
Furthermore, I'm also irritated when a man responds when I refer to him as "sir" with, "Don't call me sir, I work for a living" or "I'm not a sir." Are you seriously offended by the word sir? Would you prefer for me to refer you as "dude" or "hey you?" JFC
