i'm hardly a HD expert, but i would look at the ratio settings on the tv
AND the box itself.
the time warner hd cable box we got looks fuzzy as hell on non-HD unless you force the proper ratio. i still think you get a better picture if you bypass the box on non-hd.
i have it set up so you can change the video source to a direct cable hookup and bypass the box if i feel the need.
