Don't think anybody knows yet.

Read conjecture today that it might have been "we're all infected" which is why he was so careful to put headshots into the two he killed in the bar.

Also read conjecture that the girl who is obviously turning (that was the other wtf of the episode: they have to know what's happening to her) was never bitten so maybe the virus or whatever it is has gone airborne and she got it just from being in such close proximity to the corpse.

Which raises something else I've wondered all along. They don't take any special precaution handling the bodies. Not even gloves. I'd sure as hell want to cover as much of myself as I could, and find at least a paper mask.
