ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said that the trade market for San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith may not be robust for several reasons.

As for the Kansas City Chiefs, Mortensen said they may have more interest in Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles and West Virginia draft prospect Geno Smith than in Alex Smith, a seven-year veteran.

If that is the case, we should find out fairly quickly once the actual acquisition season starts. Right now, the Eagles say Foles will compete with Michael Vick for their starting job. So they will either be interested in dealing him to Andy Reid (who took Foles in the third round of last year’s draft and ended the season with him as his starter) or they won’t be.

If Reid is truly targeting Foles, I’m fine with that. It would mean Reid thinks Foles can win in the long term.

If Geno Smith emerges as a top pick at the NFL combine, the Chiefs can focus on him with the No. 1 overall selection in the draft.

This is a fluid situation. It’s mid-February and the Chiefs will not be able to make a move on any quarterback until free agency starts March 12. Everything is on the table.
