The metric is performance. It's really that simple. If this offense clicks into gear (which they should), and if, in the next few years, they're able to consistently go deep in the playoffs with Alex Smith behind center, then he's fine, and the trade was fine, regardless of who they coulda/shoulda/woulda had. Hell, he'll be the most popular guy in KC. Look how much everyone loves Trent Green, and he never even won a playoff game (through no real fault of his own)....
People
are understandably concerned that we're seeing a familiar script play out. There are other ways to go about it, concerning the quarterback position. But in the end what ultimately matters is performance.
