Not sure on purchasing power, but unemployment was a bit lower for most of the 90's, and also energy costs were significantly lower. People are definitely much more price sensitive now, also especially towards technology. When SNES and Sega Genesis came out the only real alternative was a $2.5k pc that did gaming, now there are many more alternatives in gaming.
