You know the saying “well, it looks good on paper”? With Black Ops II, it’s no exaggeration. To redesign the create-a-class system, “we made several board games,” reveals Vonderhaar. “I will never, ever design videogames again without going through this process, because we learned so much.”

The result of using board-game mechanics is an all-new create-a-class system, known colloquially on the team as “Pick 10,” though that name likely isn’t final or official. It’s refreshingly simple: Every weapon, attachment, or perk counts costs one of ten point, and all your options are laid out on a grid. For instance, a primary AN-94 assault rifle with a reflex sight, a Raging Judge pistol (which shoots shotgun shells!) as a secondary, three perks, a Semtex grenade, and a tactical Shock Charge – that’s eight elements, so that’s eight points. You still have two to spend.

But here’s where it gets really interesting: If you’re the kind of gamer who never uses your secondary, you don’t need to pick one. Remove it altogether, and use that point somewhere else. And what if you don’t want to use anything from the Perk 3 pool, but two of your favorites are in Perk 1? You can now do that – pay a point to buy a “wildcard” called Perk 1 Greed. Now you’re able to choose two Perk 1s, for the price of no Perk 3 plus one additional point for bending the rules. Other wildcards let you take second primary weapon or a third weapon attachment, but work on the same principle: To get something extra, you have to pay extra. This opens up a lot more freedom; you don’t have to take one of everything on the grid. Your class is truly personalized to your particular play style and preferences.
