Also, I never meant to create the impression that I don't care whether her dad/family like me or not - I care about that very much. I just don't see how asking for their blessing/permission would do anything to strengthen that relationship, unless it's something that they specifically want.

pretty much; if one is inclined to ask for the blessing, and they're nervous about the response being a 'no'.....then chances are (all things being equal) that you're doing/have done something that they find as worriesome.
I've probably worded it poorly, but you know what I mean i hope.
