Robb Stark was my number 1 but I can understand why they'd ice him. The Red Wedding was one of the craziest TV moments I can remember seeing. I will remember it forever and years from now when this show is just a distant memory, I'll likely still be able to envision what happened then.
Killing off Oberyn, though? He was colorful and interesting. I feel they lost a lot more than they could gain by getting rid of him but I guess I'll reserve final judgement until I see what comes of Tyrion's sentence..

GRRM would tell you that he's trying to write a story that is more realistic than all of the other stories out there where the hero conquers all. Kings were rarely the most noble people out there - they got where they were by destroying their enemies - often brutally. (Of course, the fact that there are dragons and white walkers obviously takes away from the realism a bit, but it is what it is.)
