He was asked to be a YAC quarterback. But here's the thing, that's exactly what Reid asks of his QBs. There's nothing about that that has to change.

If he shows up and averages 8 YPA by doing nothing more than throwing 10 yard passes at an 80% clip, that's fine with me. You'll keep the sticks moving, you'll keep your defense fresh that way and you'll help control the clock. It's not a bad approach if you have a physical WR like Bowe as your #1 target.

It's not a bad technique when you do it well. The 'dink and dunk' has developed a negative stigma around here because Cassel couldn't do it. But if you can churn your way up the field 8 yards at a time throwing high percentage, low risk passes, you're going to kick some serious ass.
Cassel could do it. In 2010 he did. And he did it much better than Alex ever did. Seriously, if we're going to discount Alex's years before Harbaugh, can we do the same for Cassel in 2011 and 2012 because of the incompetencies of the coaching staff?
