It seems like most the trouble he had has been in his time at Leeds in England. Which is not surprising...in the US most players are college educated where if you are playing high up in the English Soccer Pyramid those guys are all soccer all the time since they were very small. Not as culturally progressive.
MLS has a pretty young fan base as well so there is that. Maybe someday this will happen and it won't be news.
