This is what happens when professional franchises accept mediocrity instead of condemning it with vigor. When you worry too much about what might happen to a seasoned veteran's "dome" (at any point in the season), you are telling the players that it's OK to not produce. And while we all know how to parrot phrases like, "you have to play loose" and "you're trying too hard", we also know that it's an enabler for mediocrity.
I certainly wasn't advocating that "leadership" throw the players under the bus in front of the media "before", but now it might be in the best interest of the franchise to be a little more factual with what the players are, and aren't, doing in various aspects of their game.
At this point Esky should hear a loud BOOOOOOO every time he enters the batters box. If that's too unkind (and we are kind to a fault here in KC - ask Winston!), perhaps he should hear crickets as sort of a silent protest.
