We definitely should sign Alex Smith on the open market.
Like has been said plenty of times, after his shoulder was put right, he's improved every year. It's entirely possible that the 49ers would be playing in the Super Bowl this week even if he'd started all year. He is a former #1 overall pick. He has the talent, and it's not like he's 35. As a free agent signing it would be brilliant - or a no-brainer, depending on how you want to look at it.
Signing him doesn't preclude us from drafting a young QB.
