As I mentioned in the original
Fringe thread, it should have ended with at Season 4, when Bell disappeared. But at that point, they didn't have enough episodes for syndication, so they ordered 13 more to hit the magic number of "100".
Abrams was only on board at the beginning: It was really Kurtzman and Orci's show but in all honesty, the show was rudderless until about episode 18 of the first season. The show wanted to be
X-Files, then a Monster of the Week show, etc. and so on.
They were lucky to be renewed after season one.
