Obviously, they wisely have left the door open if they want to do something more with the character. Would've been stupid to kill him off outright, unless Sutherland said he simply didn't want to play him anymore, and to prevent being talked into it in the future he wanted Jack dead.
I guess they could've always rebooted 24 with another Jack-like character, but I doubt most fans would accept that. It's Jack or nothing!
