At the end of The Phantom Menace, I just knew that he wasn't dead and expected him to come back at that time. I'm sure glad that Lucas didn't do that in the movies, because it would have been a cheap move, although it might have been cool to see Maul and Vader fight to become the true apprentice to Sidious.
Either way, if Maul is alive in the Clone War series, it opens the door for him to be alive in the next animated series or even the live action series, when it finally happens.

They should have never killed Maul. He was one of the most ***ass underdeveloped villans of all time. Instead of introducing the other undeveloped and un-intimidating Old Dooku, Maul could have been the main antagonist all the way until Ep. III
