The theme and tone for the prequels was just all wrong. Nothing was truly fun, outside of the light saber battles, the pod race and some of the space battles. The characters were wooden but worst of all was Anakin's fall to the dark side.
It would have been so much cooler to see him as a child, angry at the universe, because he grew up a slave without a father. Along come the Jedi, which help to ease his pain somewhat but ultimately, would not be enough. Then, he would begin dabbling in Sith techniques, only to have the Emperor, whose identity and screen time limited to a few final minutes of the third film, make him his apprentice as the credits roll.
No political machinations, no love story, no Gungans, no Jar Jar. Just Anakin's path to the dark side of the Force. And Luke and Leia should have been the product of a one night stand or even better, rape.
I could buy an angry Darth Vader that raped a women who spawned the children that ultimately saved him versus a lovesick douchewad that murdered unsuspecting children.
The prequels just sucked.
