Kaepernick is dirt cheap right now. They're paying less for Smith/Kaepernick than we're paying for Cassel.
If they're not going to aggressively pursue FAs, maybe the cap space is better spent on the Kaepernick insurance than anything else.
However, if you're the Niners, you'd be very well served to consider a long-term extension for CK this off-season and if that's the case, suddenly an $8 million backup doesn't make a lot of sense.

Pretty sure they can't sign him until the rookie deal runs out
Edit: it might just be that he can't hold out and get any more money.
