SMU Football does have more accomplishment than KU. More national titles, more hall of famers, etc...
However, it is still a school that people look at as a "historical" program; along the lines of Notre Dame, Army, Nebraska, etc. It's very difficult to get back to national prominence once you've been driven down so far.
KU being in the Big 12 alone makes it's a job that's 10x better. The recent success at KU proves that once things get rolling it is a team that can appear on the national stage.
Now SMU is close to that but who knows. June Jones left to get to a BCS conference. Not sure the Big East is going to hold on to that BCS status.
