If you go back to the mid-90s when the MI series came out, a good argument can be made that MI has been the best of the genre between Bond, Bourne and MI.

Obviously Skyfall is the best of the lot, but holy shit were those later Brosnan movies terrible. The World Is Not Enough could have killed the franchise and Die Another Day was almost as bad (thankfully Rosamund Pike was around to save that one). Niether Bourne nor MI has had nearly as bad a flop as those 3 Brosnan pieces o' crap.

If MI5 is as good as the last one, I think you can put the MI franchise ahead of Bond and Bourne as the best 'spy' franchise of the last 20 years. Bourne's lost too much steam and the Renner version was okay, but not good enough (similar to MI2 really). Mission Impossible is just a really underrated franchise.
The funny part of it is the MI franchise got mothballed for a while not because it wasn't successful or making good money at the box office. In their infinite wisdom, they were displeased it didn't make even more money.

Idiots.

A happy byproduct of this though probably was no rush to get another made by x release date, so some shitty script wasn't forced for them to make do with it.

Like I said, the last one blew me away by comparison to my expectations were for what it would be. Is it Kubrick? No, but it's a well done international spy action movie movie that hits on all cylinders and really have some glaring weakness from 1st to last frame.

If we are going to discuss spy characters, I am still waiting for someone to script a treatment and direct a film in the vein of North by Northwest. Not a remake. An homage to its distinct feel that is all its own within the realm of the genre.
