It isn't backtracking. He had enormous attitude and mechanical issues in college, and was terrible at reading defenses even against inferior B1G schools. Maybe he's matured. Maybe he's fixed those problems. The preseason game is encouraging in that the mechanics look better. Reports of his work ethic are encouraging, though of course his own brass is going to talk positively about him.

But we've seen this before. Players who light it up in the preseason then look lost when the defenses start dialing it up and adjusting to your game. We've seen egos like cam Newton taste success and then the attitude comes back.

There is too much of a story still left to write. I agree that what you are seeing is encouraging. But I need to see him piece this together for a sustained period of real regular season time before I start to believe it.
