The metric is performance. It's really that simple. If this offense clicks into gear (which they should), and if, in the next few years, they're able to consistently go deep in the playoffs with Alex Smith behind center, then he's fine, and the trade was fine, regardless of who they coulda/shoulda/woulda had. Hell, he'll be the most popular guy in KC. Look how much everyone loves Trent Green, and he never even won a playoff game (through no real fault of his own)....

People are understandably concerned that we're seeing a familiar script play out. There are other ways to go about it, concerning the quarterback position. But in the end what ultimately matters is performance.
OK, here's the deal Mr. QB man. We Chiefs fans are wounded animals. So we're just gonna go ahead and hate you with all our heart for a while. But it's OK, because if you do everything right we might realize a few years from now that we should've supported you all along. Don't worry about anything short of perfection, for that way there be bitches, . . . and you're not a bitch are you Mr. QB man? I mean, right now, in my mind, you are a worthless bitch, but I'm giving you a chance to change my mind some day.

You're welcome.
