Hamilton signed through 2017 and the deal is heavily backloaded. The final year is worth a staggering $32 million. Which means that in 2018, the LA Angels will have shed a $32 million payroll obligation from the year before.
Guess when Mike Trout becomes a free agent? Yup, 2018. And don't think for a moment that the Angels didn't have that in mind when they offered Hammy the deal they offered him.
Folks - the bidding on Mike Trout starts at $32/million because the Angels clearly worked that into their salary structure. You really think the Cardinals are going to be able to beat that?
