I don't think "hate" is the right word. More like "love/hate." I think any sports purist hates but respects the hell out of a guy so arrogant and cocky, but everything they do is in the spirit of getting better and winning. A lot of the reasons LeBron is hated is because he wasn't doing that. "The Decision" was viewed as taking the easy way out. He complained about Spoelstra's practices. He was more interested in dancing on the sidelines and the chalk toss. He was always bitching about respect to the media.
To his credit, over the past year, he's gotten a lot better about that. It's actually pretty amazing how much he's matured in 2 years. But the hate comes for 2 pretty different reasons. Jordan/Tiger brand themselves well, but they weren't really showmen.
