For one, they propagate like weeds. They will literally spring up everywhere, including in the middle of gravel. Second, they're prone to internal rot, making them a hazard anytime there's a strong gust of wind.

You're probably talking about a sweet gum tree. They have seed pods that look kind of like see urchins.

The best trees around here are ginkgo trees. The fruits fall off and rot. The smell is reminiscent of dog shit.
