Spoiler!
Overall, I'm pleased with the performance of my team. I'm almost glad I didn't win the whole enchilada (especially with Blaine Gabbert as my starting QB) because it wouldn't have looked too legitimate since I programmed the thing.
After the draft I didn't have too high of hopes for the Vision. I was basically running a poor man's RBBC and after Driver my receivers weren't anything to write home about. My OL was decent but my LB were just average when all positions were considered.
Then once the NFL season played out, Fred Jackson ended up running like a true #1 back until he got injured and my receiving corp had enough depth to make the passing game efficient. The injuries to Jackson and Schaub really hurt, but they are part of the game and I didn't really have any steady depth at either position. One of my goals during the draft was to have a strong pass rush. I picked my DTs to be strong pass rushers (Suh and Atkins) and I made sure I had depth to be able to keep my pass rushers fresh. Houston was drafted as a pass rushing LB and he didn't disappoint. I also drafted for depth on my DBs so I could match up against teams that were 3 or 4 deep in WR and blitz without hurting my coverage too much. Overall my defensive draft strategy worked out.
Even though I programmed the simulator, it turned out to be complicated enough I really don't know what the ideal strategy is. I was pleased to see that similar to the real NFL, the teams with decent defenses tended to do well. I didn't want this to be like fantasy football where only skill positions matted. I think there are different strategies to build a winning team, and that emulates the real NFL. If you believe in your strategy and execute it well, you should be able to make it work.
Rain Man and I really appreciate those of you that stuck with us and provided great feedback along the way. Start thinking about how you want to improve your teams. Stay tuned because this will keep getting better.
