But, if he returns to the Alex Smith pre harbaugh this year, letting him go will be nothing to this franchise at the end of the year. Losing the pick next year, yes, that will suck, but at least you arent tied to him like the JETS are to Mark Sanchez.

There is no way to explain the compensation they gave up and the lack of bringing in or drafting a potential replacement. They think they have the face of the franchise for the next 4-5. They aren't tied to that financially, but I'm sure that's what they believe.
