You're both right and wrong.
The 88-91 Pistons gave the Bulls everything they'd ever wanted. They were the Everest the Bulls had to climb. That's not the '93-95 Pistons, which were piles of shit.
The Knicks were far better teams in '92 and '93 than '94, but they were fortunate to dodge a Jordan-less Bulls and overcome a not-yet-ready Pacers team. They ultimately dropped from the ranks of contenders, then rebuilt themselves with Van Gundy into a group of muggers who won 75-73 streetfights in the mid-late 90s.
The Pacers didn't hit their stride until about '96. From that point they were the Bulls' stiffest challenge in the East.
