I don't for one second believe that you aren't mindful of thematic concerns and character psychology and etc. when you're reading a fantasy novel or watching genre TV like Burn Notice or White Collar or something. I don't even know what "being entertained for entertainment's sake" is supposed to mean. Well, I guess I do have an idea, but I don't think that the purported meaning is a phenomenon that really exists. *opens door for discussion of genre theory but expects no one to want to go down that road with me*
Character psychology I care about insofar as it's used in character development, but overarching themes have never interested me all that much. For whatever reason my brain doesn't work that way.

It probably has to do with the fact that the primary thing I look for in entertainment is immersion. I'm an escapist. I prefer to lose myself in a narrative, rather than spend time contemplating the larger implications of the story. I would not in any way, shape or form consider myself an intellectual.

So that's what I mean by entertained for entertainment's sake. Entertainment, whether it's tv, book, movie, whatever, is a form of escape for me. I think in a lot of ways it's an outlet that allows me to "live" vicariously, since I don't have much in the way of real world social skills and/or interaction with anyone in the broader outside world. If that makes sense.

I would guess that genre theory is a bit above my pay grade.
