I just watched Monsters, it was pretty good. Knowing this was a low-low-budgeted film, I went in not expecting terribly much. I was pleasantly surprised by the richness of it and how it actually benefited from lack of special effects. Its subtlety and visual subterfuge are its strength. Like Jaws or Cloverfield, you see all the evidence and aftermath of the monsters, without actually seeing too much of them, which raises the tension. It has a great human element as you watch the relationship between the two main characters grow. The payoff in the end is the only letdown of the whole film. I wanted to get a decent look at the creatures, but they were (due to budget, I assume) hidden in darkness, despite their enormity. I would have really like to have seen a wider diversity of biology, too, and a bit more in-depth discussion of the alien species. Despite those criticisms, I still recommend it.
