I would hardly call that "based on" deception. Fact is, this guy is totally insecure. He's had a long, long relationship, presumably with no complaints. None of the honest, real feelings he had for his spouse should have been made to disappear because his spouse's sex at one point in her life didn't match up with her gender identity and presentation.
If this was in the first year of the relationship? By all means, throw a fit. After 19 years together? I think at that point you can admit that you love this person for who that person is.
