I think naive and trusting more than stupid. He grew up in the small town of Laie, Hawaii, here on Oahu, a rural town of mostly Mormons, who aren't known for being worldly. Innocent small town kid suddenly in the spotlight. An easy target. JMO, but I believe at this point he was duped unless more information comes out contradicting that.
