I haven't seen it yet but based on his description, I'll likely be disappointed as well because I thought The Avengers was complete and utter crap, yet it broke box office records.

First I think you just have to be a fan of comics or these types of movies. You like them or you don't.
I do.
On the other hand I hate the superman character.
Not only did I enjoy the film but they found a way to make me care about a character I absolutely can't stand. I'm sure purists and comix-nerds were ticked about a number of key changes to the character that made him less of a boy scout cheeseball and more of a real person.
It made me like the character more. Just like every other human this character is flawed - not the polished and squeaky clean guy we're used to.
Yeah, there were still moments that were unrealistic (even for comic standards) but I thought it was very well done overall. I thought the acting was good. No real cheesy moments. I loved the way they used spread out flashbacks instead of the usual slow and boring first 30 to 45 minutes to build a backstory.
I would say it's the 2nd best comix flick I've seen (bested only by the last two Batman movies.) Keep in mind this is from a guy who hates the character and was looking for any reason to step on Superman's cape...
