That's what I do.
The easiest way to level is Iron Daggers or Leather Bracers, I think. If you need money, use the alteration spell to transform all your iron ore into silver/gold and use all your unnecessary gems to create rings/necklaces and then enchant them. The shitty part about that is that you can only sell them to 2 merchants in Whiterun who are both pretty poor. You have a lot more freedom with armor and weapons. Also, it takes forever to transmute if you're like me and only have 100 points of Magicka (the spell costs 80).
