Yeah, I remember watching an interview where Vince Gillian had to make the show runners watch the X-files episode where Cranston played the crazy racisit dude in order to convince them that Cranston was right for the role of Walter White. Gillian probably wrote Walt's character with Cranston's X-files performance in mind. I doubt he would have known what to do if AMC told him he had to choose someone else.
