This issue's been thoroughly debated. I agree with the OP. The only thing that's changed since the discussion began is that now it's painfully obvious that Atlanta's done. Had they won Sunday and been convincing against TB, I would have thought ATL might be buyers and go in on Gordon or someone like that.

But they're 2-5. They're the 3rd best team in their division. There's no way they catch SF/SEA (whoever loses that division) for the Wild Card, and I doubt they can catch the Lions, Bears, Cardinals (head-to-head down), and Panthers for the other spot.

From our perspective, it now makes more sense because the argument that the offense is "gelling" or coming together can be thoroughly defeated by yesterday's result. The offense doesn't need more time. It needs more weapons. And getting Gonzalez is a win-now move that doesn't do much of anything to impact your win-later goals, assuming you give up nothing higher than a 5th.
