I have been using the statistics from FootballOutsiders for several years. They are a data driven determination. Not a game driven winner. We all talk about those games that are aborrations to the general play of a team. (Buffalo beating Pats 1st game 2004 season). Or that on any given Sunday any NFL team can beat another. (KC at Buffalo this season) The statistics that gives those rankings are an indication of the general strength of those teams. (By the way while on Fox site the FO only include playoff teams but on their home site they include all the teams and KC is rated 3rd best team by the end of season) But it doesn't indicate which team WILL win and with playoffs you only get one game to make a determination. The statistics are good in indicating the overall play for the season. Not the narrow play of a particular game. That is why Indy can still be rated 1st and not win the SB. Just like the best teams don't always win when they are suppose to.
So we do have a playoff that decides who wins the SB trophy. It may not include the best teams from the season.
