It comes from a movie called Catfish. It was a fake documentary about a guy who falls in love with a girl online and then he finds out she's actually a bored housewife.
They have since created a TV show on MTV where people write in and say "I'm dating this great girl/guy/horse, but they won't skype with me or meet me!"
So then they track down the person and awkward, painful hilarity ensues when they are invariably a different person/gender/species than they had proclaimed to be online.
