It's not a cold movie at all. It's just restrained. Which reflects the character at the stage where we meet him. He's kept himself apart from the world for his entire life, always holding back, a wanderer who's only now finding his place, and discovering that at least a few people in this world actually can accept him (for all the talk about Lois, Christopher Meloni's arc may have been my favorite in the movie)

when he tells the troops during the fight in Smallville that Superman is not our enemy. I loved that line and how it was set up. After Meloni committed to fight Faora-Ul with a knife (!) moments earlier. Totally badass moment. And then when he turns her line about death onto her later in the plane. Good stuff.

Anyway, that's where I think the joy in the movie is. Aside from the awesome first flight sequence. Superman finding a place, discovering that the time has finally come where he can step out into the light.

It's not Iron Man. It's not Spider-Man. It's just a different kind of movie than that, not as light-hearted. More serious, and filled with bigger ideas (not all of which work as well as they might have...). But that doesn't mean that it's emotionless.

Yea, I loved the whole setup of the film. Clark wandering around as a loner before he figures out his place. Then Zod shows up and he is forced to decide what kind of man he wants to be. Does he want to continue to run and hide, or step up and defend humanity?

Btw, all the secondary characters roles were great. Not real deep or anything, but well played. Fishburne, amy Adams, the soldier guys, the scientists etc.....well cast. Special shout out to Costner and Crowe and Shannon who were all tremendous. Just perfection. I loved how Lois Lane got involved in the action and wasn't just a screaming damsel in distress.
