I'd recommend a Sony Blu Ray before a Roku or any other box. At least you'll have a Blu Ray players.
Oh, and I disagree with your assumption. I'll never get rid of Direct TV and all of its channels. AT&T, Time Warner, Cox and the internet aren't even a close second.

Meh. It depends on how invested you want to become in your electronic entertainment. I've got an old 32" TV in my living room. It has attached to it:
a blue ray player
one old video game system
a Roku
a VCR
The piece of furniture holding all of this marvelous technology is against a side wall of our living room. If you've stopped laughing long enough to continue reading yet, we do still have a couple of movie rental places in town that carry old VHS tapes so I left the VCR hooked up.
