Even as kid, I remember thinking -
"Why doesn't the monster just attack the lions during the 3 minutes it takes them to form Voltron?" and "Why don't they just form the "Voltron sword" first instead of getting their butts kicked for 5 minutes?"
Like you said, every episode followed the same pattern with little deviation.
