So as it turns out, the old man was in the 101st Airborne and paratrooped into Europe during the Normandy invasion and was awarded a Bronze Star.
Survive the Krauts...get killed by a thug named Tyrone. A guy so smart that he killed an old woman then got arrested when he was driving around town in her car.
Yup...definitely an "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" kind of story.
