I like to take advantage of religion by picking a religious trait that produces faith per every certain type of tile worked by a city. Like Desert Folklore gives plus one faith per Desert tile. If you have a lot desert around, this can really crank up faith output. Then pick a religious trait that allows you to buy things with faith, like military units.
And you defiantly have to watch you have open boarders with. Stupid missionaries.
